pelvis description

The inner medulla (or renal papilla) extends into and is surrounded by the renal pelvis. The pelvis is composed of several cellular layers including an inner urothelial lining, in contact with the urine, and adjacent smooth muscle and interstitial (perihilar interstitium) layers.
Urine flows from the collecting ducts into the pelvic space and down the ureter into the bladder. Contraction of the pelvic and ureteral smooth muscle, initiated in the pelvis, allows the urine to be drained from the inner medullary collecting ducts.
